Stacy's Picks: Russ & Daughters
My favorite Jewish holiday of the year is Yom Kipper. Why Yom Kipper? I love hosting break fast for my family and friends and I love shopping for the meal at Russ & Daughters even more! For those of you who aren’t familiar, Yom Kipper is the “Day of Atonement”. The first half of the holiday is spent fasting and repenting for your sins. The second half is break fast, when, if you are at my house, you dig into an incredible spread courtesy of Russ & Daughters.
It’s tradition, all of it, but especially Russ & Daughters. The 100-year-old family owned “appetizing store” on the lower east side is kind of a Jewish food mecca. It literally has it all. From cream cheese to lox to white fish, salmon, and caviar (each coming in about eight or nine different varieties) there’s more than enough to choose from. My family loves it all but among our favs are the Irish and Scottish lox, scallion cream cheese, baked salmon, and chopped liver (AMAZING). And the made to order sandwiches are just as mouthwatering. The Super Heebster is my go-to with whitefish & baked salmon salad, horseradish dill cream cheese, and wasabi flying roe on a bagel – I know, incredible.
So this year, like always, I started my Yom Kippur pre-game by heading over to Russ & Daughters and pulling a number. I got to the deli at 8:30, pulled number 49, and at hearing they were only up to 5 settled in for the long, but extremely rewarding, wait. By 12:15 I was out and carrying a bag full of the ingredients for a seriously fantastic break fast. The Holidays definitely create a mad dash to the store and it was voted one of “America’s Best Places to Eat Like a Local” by Travel + Leisure this year so it’s popularity is no question, but the four hour wait is a rarity and trying their food is a must. As of now the Russ & Daughters’ lower east side location is the only place to grab the goods, but there’s a rumor going around that a restaurant is in the works and if it’s true I’ll be more than ready to pick a number opening night.Russ & Daughters179 East Housten StreetNew York, NY 10002(212) 475 - 4880
