Stacy's Picks: Kyo Ya
On Monday night Ruk Richards and I got together for our bi-annual dinner. Since this is a rare occasion we tend to go for something more foodie and adventurous – a worthy marker for our meetings. This time it was pouring out and I had no idea where to go, but with a quick scroll through The Platt 101, Adam Platt's picks for the Best of New York City, I found what I was looking for - Kyo Ya, a small Japanese restaurant in the East Village with no website and no sign outside. But it turned out to be a complete treasure. Between the two of us we split the Goma Tofu Cocktail (diced sesame tofu in cold broth), the Famous Sweet Potato Tempura with Soy Sauce and Mongolian Salt, Seasonal Mixed Rice with Pork Belly cooked in a clay pot, Pressed Sushi with Salmon and Shiso Leaf, and the Black Cod with Miso Glaze. The dishes were full of rich colors, one of a kind flavors, and came beautifully prepared - practically works of art. Kyo Ya may have been hard to find, but my tastebuds and I couldn't be happier I did.
