It's the summer slow-down and time for my annual end of season celebratory dinner with Andy Whalen. As per our tradition we headed up to Sushi of Gari on West 46th Street, one of my high-end favs, where Andy and I are familiar faces and the freshest fish you could imagine is served. Sitting at the sushi bar, in the same spot we sit every time, we opted for Omakase - the chef's choice tasting menu - and were greeted by a series of beautifully prepared dishes. All of the food at Sushi of Gari is worthy of applause, but plates like the Tuna with Tofu Sauce, Salmon with Sauteed Tomato, Seared Fatty Tuna with a hint of Garlic and Ginger Sauce, and the Baked Oyster - an oyster so good I literally daydream about it - deserve a standing ovation. Every piece is prepared on spot and no soy sauce is ever used because the chef makes each dish exactly how it is intended to be - this stuff is art. During an Omakase meal you're supposed to tell the chef to stop when you're full, but this time was so delicious it was especially hard to put down our chopsticks. These meals are always a treat, but enjoying it with Andy who is fluent in Japanese makes them all the more special. Sushi of Gari is the perfect place to take a client you're trying to impress and equally ideal as the restaurant David and I dine at before we catch a nearby show. At a spot this good reservations are a must and buyer beware - the sushi is expensive - but all I can say is, it's worth every penny.
