The second installment of our Halloween series (see part one, here) is all about costumes. Before the days of store-bought superheroes and fairy princesses, Halloween costumes were homemade… and, in many cases, very strange. Costume designer Arianne Phillips shared some of her favorite vintage Halloween photos with us and we’re adapting those ideas for today!

As horrifying and creepy as a lot of these outfits seem, it’s the creativity behind them that is really impressive. While a lot of these looks are unexplainable, in what they’re supposed to be or how you would go about making them, they really are creative nonetheless.

For Halloween last year, Stacy’s two girls went out in a couple of adorable costumes: Sadie as a snow-princess and Rory as a minion from Despicable Me. Rory's costume was put together by combining a bunch of normal clothing items while staying true to the minion look. By making the costume at home, it instantly became more fun and unique!

We can't wait to see what they look like this year!
